Our Ancestors

An important part of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is to honor the sacrifice of our ancestors. On this page we honor them, their service, their courage, their sacrifices.

Lt. Colonel Clinton McKamy Winkler

Our Commander, Randy Lucas, is a collateral descendant of Lt. Colonel Clinton McKamy Winkler. Born in North Carolina, he went with his family to Indiana but followed his mother's brother to the Republic of Texas. He became a lawyer and a state legislator and was instrumental in the forming of Navarro County and settled in its county seat of Corsicana. When Texas seceded, Winkler formed a company called the "Navarro Rifles" which went on to be Co. I of the 4th Texas Infantry, one of the regiments that formed what passed into legend as Hood's Texas Brigade. He fought throughout the war, first as Captain of Co. I, he was seriously wounded at Gettysburg and shortly thereafter promoted to Major. He was promoted Lt. Colonel in 1864 and took command of the 4th Texas in May. He commanded the brigade from October 1864 through February 1865 and remained in command of the regiment until the surrender by General Lee at Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865.

After the war, Colonel Winkler returned to Corsicana and practiced law. He was appointed as one of the first Judges of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and served as Grand Master of the Texas Masons and the first president of the Hood's Texas Brigade Association. He died in 1882 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana.
